This month we celebrate the 2015 Pantone Colour of the Year: Marsala – a reddish-brown that is in-between terracotta and burgundy. Named after an Italian wine, Marsala is a down-to-earth colour that gives a sense of security and comfort; it exudes confidence, energy and strength; a grounded colour that feeds our mind, body and soul.
Two similar colours feature in the Plascon 2015 Colour Forecast: Just Terracotta R7-C1-1 and a darker version African Queen R5-D1-1. The closest Plascon colour to Pantone 18-1438 Marsala is a colour called Sienna Canyon Walls R5-C1-2 (take a look on Placon’s Inspired Colour System).
Marsala is rich, warm, welcoming hue… A shade that’s not too bright and overwhelming but still you are drawn to it; it also has a touch of elegance to it. It is a versatile colour that can be used on its own in either gloss or matt or it can be used with almost any other colour.
Being a rich, organic earthy red, it’s a natural fit for a kitchen or dining room. It can also be used in the living room – I can imagine a beautiful velvet or leather couch in this colour, as well as carpets and accessories to warm up a space.
A surprise for many, Marsala was not chosen because it is a hot fashion colour, but because it is a colour that will resonate around the world – it’s a colour that people need. Marsala is also a colour that crosses all areas of design: beauty (a perfect lip and nail colour), fashion (both men and women), packaging and product design, as well as interiors. I look forward to seeing more of this colour in 2015.
