My fascination with encaustic tiles first started in the 1990s when I lived in the United Kingdom for a couple of years. In the spirit of the love month, look at this stunning red kitchen with a back wall of blue encaustic tiles:

Encaustic tiles have been around for centuries, especially in cathedrals and homes in Europe. Described best by trusted Wikipedia:

Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles in which the pattern or figure on the surface is not a product of the glaze but of different colors of clay. They are usually of two colors but a tile may be composed of as many as six. The pattern appears inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design remains as the tile is worn down. Encaustic tiles may be glazed or unglazed and the inlay may be as shallow as an eighth of an inch, as is often the case with “printed” encaustic tile from the later medieval period, or as deep as a quarter inch.

Let’s look at these beauties used in different rooms in a house…

Bathrooms seem to be the first place where they would find a home. Here is proof that it doesn’t have to look outdated:

Love these black and white tiles… Perfect to use with neutral whites in your home; perfect to make a statement in a guest bathroom:

How amazing is this living room? My inspiration here is the blue that reminds me of the 2016 Plascon Colour of the Year, Atlantic Beach (B5-B1-1). Also proves that floor tiles do not only fit in a neutral room:

Below is a beautiful modern kitchen with all the stainless-steel appliances and drawers. The floor tiles soften the look and makes me want to sit at that table the whole day!
