Get ready, because all indications are that the Smurfs are going to be painting the country blue this month with the release of Smurfs 2 on the 20th of September.
There is more to the colour of these little creatures than you would think. Smurf blue is close to cerulean blue, but is apparently a unique color which has been trademarked by Hanna-Barbera – the company responsible for creating The Smurfs.
Plascon Colour Of The Month September: Cerulean Blue
Despite the size of Smurfs, they are able to have quite an impact on a place. In Spain, village houses are traditionally painted white; but in the village of Júzcar, all the houses were painted blue in response to being chosen as host to the premier of the 3D Smurf film.
This particular shade of blue is youthful, fun and invigorating – ideal for teenager bedrooms. It helps stimulate conversation and creativity and dispels feelings of loneliness. The classic combination with white makes it fresh and uplifting.
Red accents will add warmth to the colour scheme…
It can also work beautifully in an adult bedroom; notice how this minimalist bedroom is so much more interesting with just one vertical stripe of colour on the wall. The beauty of this is that it is picking up the blue in the painting above the bed. Such a great colour tip: choosing a paint colour from a painting or fabric/cushion in your room will really bring a colour scheme together.
Not something you see that often, but having just been to Decorex in Johannesburg I did notice a lot more blue being used in kitchens, and why not when it can look as beautiful as this…
This entrance to an apartment in Cape Town is just beautiful. Imagine coming home to this each day – so relaxing, creative and inspiring.
A living room can also be painted in this colour – the clever use of black and white in the furniture, curtains and accessories is what makes this room work so well.
If you feel this may be too overwhelming, then one of the ways you can introduce this colour into your colour scheme is by painting old furniture, or new furniture, giving it a totally unique look.
And of course if you have a traditional home with a neutral colour scheme, you can give it a lift by adding some of this inspiring, refreshing and interesting colour in your accessories. It’s a wonderful uplifting yet serene colour that can help alleviate mental strain and fatigue.

This may not be for everyone, but if you have kiddies you may want to take them to see Smurfs 2 – here is the trailer:
Remember: the 1st to the 7th of September is National Colour Week, so be sure to think about what colour makes you feel great and be sure to surround yourself with it.
